Ronald M. Nufrio

April 10, 1947 - February 4, 2024

Ronald Michael Nufrio,

Age 76, of Foxcross Drive, Sidney, passed away of natural causes Sunday evening, February 4, 2024, at the Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio.  He was born April 10, 1947, in Richmond, Indiana, to the late Rocco & Marie (Stracke) Nufrio.  On June 27, 1973, at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Newport, Ron married his wife of 50 years, Janet “Jane” (Borchers) Nufrio who survives.  Also surviving are two children, Beth & John Cassady of Westfield, IN, and David & Krista (Metzer) Nufrio of Kensington, MD, along with five grandchildren: Jay, Natalie and Lindsey Cassady and Marie and Joshua Nufrio; four siblings: Dan Nufrio of Fountain City, IN, Mary Henson & Larry Miller of Eaton, Janet & Jerry Stamper of Greens Fork, IN, and Lisa Deboy of Farmland, IN; sisters & brothers-in-law: Julia Weaver of Centerville, Rebecca & Leslie Nason of Waterford, WI, Alan & Robin Borchers of Jackson Center, Joseph & Joan Borchers of Versailles, Frank Borchers of New Bremen, Mark & Therese Borchers of Versailles, Mary & Mark Heft of Versailles, Teresa & Chuck Kohlhepp of Xenia, Christopher & Kimberly Borchers of Versailles, Steven & Lillian Borchers of Versailles and Kathy & Randy Schmitz of Versailles as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.  He was preceded in death by three brothers-in-law, Jeff Henson, Orville Borchers Jr. and Steven Weaver.

Mr. Nufrio was a 1965 graduate of Whitewater-Fountain City High School.  He continued on to graduate from Ball State University in 1969 with a bachelor’s degree in education.  He also received master’s degrees from the University of Dayton in administration (1977) and counseling (1981).

Ron was a life-long educator.  He began his career as an English teacher at Anna Local Schools where he later became the first elementary and middle school counselor.  He also taught English classes at Edison State Community College and counseling classes for the University of Dayton.

After retiring from Anna Local Schools, Ron worked as a federal grant coordinator for the Midwest Regional Educational Service Center and continued to help students further their education by serving on several scholarship committees including the Deacon John Holthaus Memorial Scholarship and the James P. Humphrey Sidney-Shelby County Black Achievers Scholarship Committees.

During his forty-one year career, Ron received the University of Dayton/Western Ohio Education Association Teacher of the Year Award and the Ohio Career Education Association Outstanding Career Planning Team Award; served as a member of the Ohio Attorney General’s Prescription Drug  Advisory Council; helped start Shelby County’s Academia competition; coordinated in-service programs for educators; organized parenting programs; and authored articles on English, history, counseling, gifted education, administration, and special education topics.

Ron was a member of St. Joseph Pillar of Families Parish and attended Holy Angels Catholic Church in Sidney where he had been a Eucharistic minister, lector, and FOCCUS group leader.  In his leisure, he enjoyed visiting with family and friends, reading, traveling, and keeping up on current events.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:30 AM, Monday, February 12, 2024, at Sts. Peter & Paul Church in Newport with Rev. Stephen Mondiek presiding.  Interment will follow at Sts. Peter & Paul Church Cemetery.  Family and friends may call Sunday, 2:00 to 7:00 PM and Monday 9:00 to 10:00 AM at Gehret Funeral Home in Fort Loramie.  Memorials may be made to the Anna Education Foundation, the Deacon John Holthaus Memorial Scholarship Committee or the Black Achievers Scholarship Committee.  Private condolences may be expressed at gehretfuneralhome.com.
