George Joseph Monnier,
Age 99, of Hughes Road, Houston, passed away peacefully of natural causes Saturday afternoon, August 2, 2025. He was born February 24, 1926, in Russia, Ohio, to the late Leonard & Winiford (Monnin) Monnier. On August 13, 1949, at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Burkettsville, George married Ruby (Hoening) Monnier (his wife of 73-1/2 years) who preceded him in death on June 5, 2023. Surviving are four children: Georgia Monnier of Piqua, Dennis & Cindy Monnier of Maplewood, Paul & Doris Monnier of Houston and Jennifer Monnier of Houston; 10 grandchildren: Amanda Moore, Michael & Christine Moore, Emily & Carl Lichtenberg, Katy Monnier, Danielle & Ryan Poeppelman, Nicholas Monnier, Jacob Monnier & fiancée, Erica Schrock, Jennifer Monnier & fiancé, Sam Garnett, Sarah Monnier, Jessica Monnier and 11 great-grandchildren: Jason, Kamron, Akeira, Kellen, Oliver, Emma, Levi, Grace, Gus, Reese, Ivy and one on the way; brothers & sisters-in-law: Mary Lou Hoening of West Milton, Margaret Hoening of Versailles and Joan Helton & Bill Denlinger of Troy along with numerous nieces and nephews.
George was preceded in death by both parents, one daughter, Beth Moore; seven siblings: Millard & Betty Monnier, Marjorie Godown, James Monnier, Richard Monnier, Mary Lou Stefanakas, David & Phillis Monnier and Harrison & Naomie Monnier; father & mother-in-law, Paul & Rosa (Hart) Hoening and brothers & sisters-in-law: Carl Hoening, Eugene Hoening, Madonna & Charles McCarthy and infant Paul Hoening.
Mr. Monnier was a WWII US Army Veteran. He served in the 75th Division (AKA Diaper Division) at the Battle of The Bulge and carried a BAR (Browning Automatic Rifle). He was engaged in dairy and swine farming all of his working life. He had also been a skilled brick mason. Over the years, he worked for Freytag Masonry as well as other local companies. George was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church where he had been an usher many years ago. He belonged to the Western Ohio Coon Hunters Association and was a past member of the Bricklayers Union and Sidney American Legion. Working with his hands was George’s livelihood and his pleasure.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:30 AM, Saturday, August 9, 2025, at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Newport with Rev. Mark Bredestege presiding. Interment will take place at the church cemetery followed by a memorial luncheon in the church basement. Memorials may be made to the Lockington and Houston Fire Departments or charities of choice.
